At Kungliga Djurgården, it’s natural not only to preserve cultural heritage from the past but also to ensure its relevance for the future. Nordiska museet’s collection project “Mitt liv” (My Life) is a central part of this effort. By carrying on the tradition of documenting and preserving everyday life from various perspectives, Nordiska museet once again actively contributes to several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The “Mitt liv” project, initiated in spring 2020, has inspired schoolchildren across Sweden to reflect on their lives and experiences through a digital exhibition reflecting our contemporary times. With over 6,500 submitted stories from 663 classes, the project clearly demonstrates how it not only preserves history but also strengthens community and understanding among different societies and generations.
Nordiska museet, founded by Artur Hazelius to preserve cultural heritage for future generations, continues to be a driving force in bridging the past with a sustainable and inclusive future. It plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable development and preserving our shared history.
By engaging school children all over Sweden in documenting their lives, the project promotes learning and reflection. It offers children a unique opportunity to develop their ability to communicate and reflect on their surroundings.
The project makes voices and perspectives from many different schools and thus different parts of society visible. This enhances understanding between different social groups, fostering increased empathy and respect for each other’s experiences.
By creating a platform where children’s voices are heard and their stories are preserved, the project contributes to building peaceful societies in which every individual feels represented.
