We Shed Light on World Toilet Day

Today, I’m reading about how our colleagues at Skansen are highlighting World Toilet Day – a more important day than you might think.

Skansen is taking the opportunity to showcase its excellent collaboration with Stockholm Vatten och Avfall (Stockholm Water and Waste), a partner in their educational efforts at the Baltic Sea Science Center. Together, they provide lessons that increase knowledge and engagement around water and sustainability for students and other visitors.

To mark the occasion, they’re sharing some toilet facts 🚽:

  • Toilets are something many of us take for granted, but nearly 2 billion people lack access to proper sanitation.
  • Use the toilet only for what it’s meant for! Almost 35,000 kg of waste is flushed into Stockholm’s sewers every week.
  • Did you know that if you lined up all of Stockholm’s sewer pipes, they would stretch over 3,200 km? That’s the same distance as from Stockholm to Cairo, Egypt.
  • The first public toilet was in ancient Rome, where sponges on sticks were used as toilet paper!

An important day indeed. Perhaps it deserves more attention?
For now, we thank Skansen.
