Junibacken and the publisher house Rabén & Sjögren promote the joy of reading for the youngest children
Inspiring children to discover the joy of reading early in life and showing them how stories can open new worlds, provide insights, and create moments of recognition is an investment in their future. To achieve this, the children’s cultural center Junibacken and the renowned publishing house for children’s and young adult’s books Rabén & Sjögren, have joined forces in Lässtegen (in english The reading ladder). It is a reading initiative aimed at younger children. The goal? To lay a foundation for lifelong reading and learning. And to expand children’s vocabulary, and nurture a love for stories, imagination, and knowledge.
Lässtegen – 50 Story Sessions
Through Lässtegen, preschools can win a full day at Junibacken and book packages from Rabén & Sjögren. Each participating preschool is encouraged to complete 50 story sessions during the spring term of 2025. Lässtegen provides a fun and simple way to encourage more read-aloud moments and create shared reading experiences for preschool children. The initiative aims to engage both educators and children.
“Children’s books are the foundation of everything Junibacken offers, intending to ignite a spark for lifelong reading. Our mission has never been more important,” says Kajsa Medin Hansen, CEO of Junibacken.
Free Program for Preschools
Participation is free for preschools and open preschools, and the first 1,000 to sign up will receive a starter kit. All participating preschools gain access to a digital toolbox. The box contains decoration materials, educational tips from authors and reading professionals. There are also invitations to inspirational gatherings evenings at Junibacken in early 2025.
Expanding Access to Reading for All
Read-aloud sessions in preschools provide children who may not have access to books at home with a chance to experience the magical world of literature. Studies show that children who are read to gain a much larger vocabulary, enhancing their comprehension, and learning abilities.
“We know that reading to children at an early age has a profoundly positive effect on their empathy, understanding, and ability to learn. Research shows you can’t start early enough! With Lässtegen, we want to help preschools build a strong foundation for children’s language development and imagination in a fun and engaging way,” says Jenny Edh Jansen, Communications Manager at Rabén & Sjögren.
Lässtegen registration is open till December 15th 2024.
By initiating Lässtegen, Junibacken is helping spark a passion for lifelong reading and learning. Early access to stories and books builds a strong foundation for language development, giving children the tools they need to grow a rich vocabulary and a lifelong love of literature. (4, 4.2)
