Skansen Tops Sustainability Ranking – Congratulations to a Leading Industry Player

Sustainble Brand Index

Skansen, Sweden’s open-air museum and zoo, continues to lead the way in sustainable tourism. In the Sustainable Brand Index 2026, Skansen is recognized as Sweden’s most sustainable brand within the travel and tourism sector – for the fourth consecutive year.

The ranking is based on Swedish consumers’ perceptions of how sustainable different brands are. Skansen’s repeated top placement highlights the long-term commitment and credible sustainability work carried out by the organization.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Skansen integrates sustainability throughout its operations – from energy and resource management to workplace environment, visitor experiences, and financial responsibility. A clear action plan guides the organization’s development across several priority areas.

Climate-Smart Practices in Action

In recent years, Skansen has implemented a range of measures to reduce its environmental impact. Energy use has been optimized, water consumption reduced, and reliance on fossil fuels phased out. Since 2023, the park’s vehicle fleet has been completely fossil-free.

Waste management and circularity are continuously improved, and further steps are being taken to make it easier for visitors to sort waste throughout the park.

An Important Educator

With over 50,000 schoolchildren participating in educational programs each year, Skansen plays a significant role in learning for sustainable development. Its programs are aligned with Agenda 2030 and help increase knowledge about nature, cultural heritage, and sustainable living.

Conservation and Animal Welfare at the Core

Skansen’s zoo is an integral part of its biodiversity work. Through education, research, and international collaborations, the park contributes to species preservation and increased public knowledge about nature and wildlife.

Animal welfare is always a top priority. Habitats are designed to meet the needs of each species, and all animal care is carried out by trained keepers, zoologists, and veterinarians.

Collaboration as a Foundation

Partnerships and collaborations are key to driving sustainability forward. Skansen demonstrates how local and international cooperation strengthens the ability to achieve tangible results. This reflects the collaborative approach across Djurgården, where attractions work together to create a more sustainable destination.

A Sustainable Workplace

Skansen’s staff are central to its success. By focusing on values, workplace environment, and professional development, the organization creates an inclusive and engaging workplace – an essential part of long-term sustainability.

Skansen’s continued recognition shows that consistent and comprehensive sustainability work makes a real difference and inspires others to take action.

We are proud of Skansen’s engagement and drive as a fellow Djurgården colleague, and of how it contributes to the shared sustainability efforts across the entire island. Together, we continue to develop a destination that demonstrates how collaboration among Djurgården’s attractions is one of the most important keys to long-term change.
