The Ongoing Journey Towards Sustainable Tourism at Royal Djurgården
Never finished.
Ever improving.
This mantra is key when striving for sustainable tourism. At Royal Djurgården, it’s not just a phrase—it’s a commitment we live by every day.
Two years ago, Royal Djurgården proudly received the Green Destinations Platinum Award, aligning with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards. At that time, our sustainability practices were assessed through a desk audit, a rigorous review of our documentation and reports. While this recognition was a significant milestone, the journey towards sustainability is ongoing, and continuous improvement is essential.
Now, two years later, we’ve reached another critical checkpoint in our sustainability efforts: an on-site audit. This recent audit took things a step further, with an independent auditor conducting a thorough, two-day review at Royal Djurgården. The process involved not only reviewing our updated reports but also visiting many of our beloved attractions, such as Skansen, Tekniska Museet, Gröna Lunds Tivoli AB, Vasa Museum and its restaurant, Stiftelsen Rosendals Trädgård, and Stiftelsen Nordiska Museet. Interviews were also conducted, providing a comprehensive evaluation of our collective efforts.
These audits, both desk and on-site, are vital for ensuring that our sustainability initiatives remain effective and that we continue to progress. They offer us a valuable opportunity to reflect on our work, showcase our progress, and identify areas where we can improve. We’re grateful to everyone at Royal Djurgården for their dedication and hard work in this ongoing mission.
The auditor praised our structured approach to sustainability, particularly highlighting the strong collaboration with over 60 entrepreneurs who share our commitment to common goals. While sustainability is a journey with no final destination—there’s always room to grow—the initial feedback from the on-site audit indicates that we are on the right path.
The final audit report is still in the works, but the early impressions are encouraging. As we continue on this journey, we remain committed to making Royal Djurgården a shining example of sustainable tourism, ever improving, one step at a time.
